Musings on life

Sitting at work, jamming to spinner, trying to finish some longer-term projects.

Lately work has seemed like a one-step forward, two steps back enterprise. A lot of it is my attitude and professional demeaner, which makes it all very...personal. Oh well. There's an opportunity to improve my standing with the "clients" in the next few weeks since boss C is out, so I'll try to do the best I can with that.

Book club was fun. We held it at B's new apartment, which is all neat and new and adult-looking. No sitting around the coffee table on the floor like at my apartment.

I wouldn't say the discussion was excessively literary (it never is), but we talked about short stories generally, our favorites from the collection, and generally why we thought those short stories might be considered Hemingway's "greatest."

Went home to watch Gilmore Girls from tape with J. Definitely a set-up episode for the rest of the season, but still fun. Dean has a last name! Kirk was in the credits! What can you complain about, really?

Am trying to finish a collection of Hemmingway's short stories (The Snows of Kilimanjaro) in time for book club tonight at 7:30. My question is, are the Nick Adams in the story the same? I'm leaning towards no. But then why the same name? Hopefully, we'll have good discussions tonight.

The title story, "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," reminded me of one of my favorite short stories, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." I wonder if either author was influenced by the other?

We had quite a debate selecting the book for this month. Retrospectively, I wish we'd selected a collection of short stories that the author wrote/ published at the same time. That way, the discussion could include an analysis of selection and placement. I still remember Professor what's-his-name frantically drawing on the blackboard, trying to illustrate the highs and lows of ETA Hoffman's stories in his collection.

The Name: I loved the book. It was the first book I literally couldn't put down as a child. How cool would it be if you could actually wrinkle time? It still fascinates me, 15 years later.
